The Imagining the Internet Center in the School of Communications partners with the Pew Internet & American Life Project in Washington, D.C., on a series of futuristic surveys of world internet leaders.

The latest report involving 1,200 participants, released today, predicts that the phone will be the primary device for online access by 2020. But the experts disagree on whether this will lead to more social tolerance or to better home lives.

In other words, technology is just that — technology. It will change our pattern of social dynamics, but technology itself is neither a social good nor a social evil. The users — us — will determine whether technology creates good outcomes for ourselves and our society.

The report titled “Future of the Internet III” is authored by School of Communications associate professor Janna Anderson, who is the director of Elon’s Imagining the Internet Center, in cooperation with Lee Rainie, director of the Pew Internet & American Life Project.
