National Champs

We celebrate the good news that Elon’s student television newscast has again won first place in the nation.

phoenixi14news1This is our third #1 in six years based on national judging through the Broadcast Education Association.

Students representing Phoenix14News, accompanied by their adviser Professor Rich Landesberg, will receive the award at the BEA convention in Las Vegas in April. Elon’s student newscast also will receive the “Best of Festival” award  — our first time to win “Best of Festival.”

Also, a special congratulations to junior Randy Gyllenhaal, who won third-place nationally in the Hearst Journalism Awards television news competition. Students at the University of Florida and the University of Southern California won first and second place. Randy has been invited to submit additional entries for judging that could lead to an invitation to compete in the program’s National Broadcast News Championships in San Francisco.

Overall, Elon tied for seventh place in the nation in the Hearst broadcast news competitions. Syracuse placed first, followed by Arizona State, North Carolina, Southern Cal, Florida, Penn State, Elon (tie), Montana (tie), Nebraska and Hofstra. This is only our third year in the Hearst competitions, and it’s our first Top 10 finish.
