CNN journalist Anderson Cooper arrived at Elon earlier than scheduled, and he readily agreed to spend that extra hour greeting students in the School of Communications and stopping by several classes for impromptu Q&A.

It was amusing to stick my head in classrooms and ask the teachers, “Would it be okay with you if Anderson Cooper came in to chat with your students for about 15 minutes?” When Cooper actually entered the classroom, students in one class erupted in what I can only call “squeals,” similar to how young people sounded when The Beatles came on stage.

During the classroom visits, Cooper encouraged students to concentrate on their writing skills, get good internships, and work harder than anyone else to launch their careers. He also answered questions about how CNN seeks to be the balanced news channel as FOX provides a more conservative point-of-view and MSNBC provides a more liberal point-of-view.

Cooper was at Elon to deliver the Honors Convocation address that afternoon. He arrived by air without having lunch, so one of our students got him a chicken salad sandwich at The Acorn across the street.

What a nice guy. He made himself fully available to students during his day at Elon, making it especially memorable for them.
