Nine Reasons to Celebrate 2009

Students have made this a remarkable year in the School of Communications. As a recap, here are nine student accomplishments in 2009, our ninth year as a School, in the order they occurred:

1. Another Bateman Top 10
For the third year in a row, Elon’s public relations team finished in the Top 10 nationally in the Bateman case study competition.

2. Nation’s Top Student Newscast
Elon’s student television newscast, Phoenix14News, was named #1 in the nation in Broadcast Education Association judging — our third top ranking in the nation in the past six years.

3. Scripps Howard Internships
Two Elon students were selected for prestigious (and paid) Scripps Howard Foundation summer internships. This shows Ashley Barnas at Washington Post Digital.

4. Nation’s Top TV Student Journalist
In San Francisco, Randy Gyllenhaal was named the #1 student broadcast journalist in the country in the Hearst Journalism Awards competition.

5. New M.A. in Interactive Media
Our cutting-edge graduate program has a class of 36 students who are combining strategic thinking with new-media skills in the intensive, one-year program.

6. Elon in Los Angeles
In the summer, 28 students took a class, completed a professional internship, and experienced media life in LA. This shows a student competing on “The Price Is Right.”

7. Understanding Diversity
The student film society, Cinelon, created vignettes telling the stories of eight college students learning about issues of race, gender, national origin, religion, disability, sexuality and social class for an diversity education series.

8. National Pacemaker Award
Elon’s student newspaper, The Pendulum, was a first-time recipient of a coveted national Pacemaker, awarded to fewer than 20 college newspapers in the United States.

9. An Egyptian Experience
Elon students had the extraordinary experience of going to Egypt to help cover the UN’s Internet Governance Forum last month. This shows Eugene Daniel and Drew Smith in Egypt.
